Apple sets Sept. 9 event for iPhone 18 Pro and first foldable iPhone under new CEO

Apple will hold its annual iPhone event on September 9, expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro series and its first foldable iPhone, in the first keynote led by incoming CEO John Ternus.

According to multiple reports, Apple is expected to announce two Pro models, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, as iterative upgrades focused on display, camera, and connectivity. Rumored features include a variable-aperture main camera, a smaller Dynamic Island, and Apple’s C2 cellular modem, with color options possibly including dark cherry, black, silver, and light blue. Unlike past years, the standard iPhone 18 is not expected to appear at this event; reports suggest Apple will split its iPhone launch cycle, with the base model, iPhone 18e, and iPhone Air 2 following in spring 2027.

The centerpiece is likely to be Apple’s first foldable iPhone, rumored to be called iPhone Ultra. According to reports, the device will use a book-style design with an outer display of 5.3 to 5.5 inches and an inner display of 7.6 to 7.8 inches, featuring a titanium frame and a virtually crease-free screen. It may replace Face ID with Touch ID integrated into the power button and could include two front-facing cameras and a dual-camera rear system. Pricing estimates range from $1,999 to $2,500, which would make it Apple’s most expensive iPhone yet.

Industry analysts are optimistic about the foldable’s prospects. Bloomberg reported that IDC senior research director Nabila Popal expects Apple to deliver more than 10 million foldable iPhone shipments in its first year of availability. Counterpoint Research recently forecast that book-type foldables would account for 76% of global foldable shipments in 2026, and that Apple could capture 25% of the foldable market that year. IDC also predicts Apple will eventually account for 40% of all foldable shipments in 2027, helping avert a double-digit decline in the category this year.

Alongside iPhones, Apple is expected to update the Apple Watch lineup with the Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, focusing on processor and health improvements rather than redesigns. AirPods 5 are also anticipated, while a new Apple Watch SE is not currently expected. Apple recently announced new Mac mini and Mac Studio models that will ship on September 22. The company may also announce launch dates for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS Golden Gate, as well as a new Siri AI assistant powered by large language models.

The event will be streamed on Apple’s website, YouTube, and the Apple TV app, with press attending at the Steve Jobs Theater. Apple did not provide additional details beyond the invitation.
