Apple Ships iOS 27.2 Beta 3 With New Music Logo, Books Redesign and Hints of Touchscreen Mac Support

Apple released iOS 27.2 beta 3 to developers with a redesigned Apple Music logo, changes to the Apple Books reading interface and code hinting at new Messages controls and touchscreen Mac support, according to 9to5Mac.

The same report said a new public beta followed on Tuesday, ahead of a final release to all users before the end of the month.

The most visible change in the beta is a new Apple Music logo. Apple teased the mark last month when it announced Apple Music Hall, and the beta indicates it is about to roll out more broadly. The design uses a bolder typeface than the previous logo and a lowercase "m" in "music." Apple has also begun applying it to the Apple Music sign-up flow in iOS 27.2 beta 3, 9to5Mac reported.

Code inside the beta suggests Apple is building a setting that would give users more control over suggested actions appearing in the Messages app, such as the "Add to Calendar" button. According to 9to5Mac, the code points to the ability to disable suggested actions for individual apps, including Calendar, Reminders, Notes and Maps. The feature is not enabled in this build, and the report noted Apple could drop it before release.

iOS 27.2 beta 3 also brings design updates to Apple Books. Beta Profiles, writing on X, spotted new Liquid Glass styling in the app along with a progress bar for tracking a reader's position in a book. A separate 9to5Mac report described the changes in more detail: the menu in the bottom-right corner now uses a three-dot icon and standard Liquid Glass treatment, the bookmark has been moved out of that menu to a standalone button in the upper-right corner, the "X" button has moved to the upper-left, and the "Back" button has moved to the lower-left and is larger than before. The report linked the work to the expected arrival of iPhone Duo.

Separately, macOS 27.2 beta 3 contains further signs of Apple preparing macOS for touch input. The touchscreen MacBook Pro is expected to be unveiled as soon as this month, and the beta adds what the report described as new "gesture recognition tools" for several stock Apple apps, plus a long-press animation for the Dock.

Other changes noted in the beta include code, found by Aaron Perris, suggesting that nearby smart home accessories could show controls in the Dynamic Island, and a slightly redesigned battery icon in the Settings app and elsewhere in iOS, spotted by Beta Profiles. The beta also adds new splash screens for the Apple Fitness and Apple TV apps.
