Apple told 9to5Mac that it will release a software update early next week to fix a problem that causes some iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max units to restart after a failed Face ID attempt. 9to5Mac reported earlier this week that the issue occurs when a user tries to use Face ID to unlock an app such as Passwords and the authentication fails; the iPhone may then unexpectedly reboot.

The 9to5Mac author said he was unable to reproduce the problem on an iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max, but it affected a number of users. The report described it as a bug that can be fixed through software rather than a hardware fault.
