Apple TV adds classic movies like 'The Martian' and 'E.T.' for subscribers

Apple TV is typically known for its original series like Ted Lasso and Severance, and these films are usually only available to buy or rent from the Apple TV Store. The move is a departure from Apple's usual focus on originals, according to Engadget. Engadget reports around 20 movies were added, while 9to5Mac says the number is more than 15.

The full list of new movies, as reported by Engadget, includes The Martian, Arrival, The Bourne Identity, Looper, E.T., The Proposal, I, Robot, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, 21 Jump Street, The Sixth Sense, Gone Girl, Zoolander, Zodiac, Charlie's Angels, Titanic, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, A Beautiful Mind, The Aviator, and The Rookie.

9to5Mac noted that the titles vary by region, but in the U.S. they include popular hits like The Martian, Arrival, Gone Girl, The Proposal, Zodiac, and 21 Jump Street. That report also said the additions essentially doubled Apple's film library overnight.

It's not clear why Apple has decided to add these films or how long they'll remain available, Engadget said. The move is likely aimed at boosting engagement and retention while attracting new subscribers, as streaming services often see high viewership of classic content.

Apple also has a busy fall lineup of original films ahead, according to 9to5Mac. Scheduled releases include Mayday on September 4, The Last First: Winter K2 on October 2, Matchbox The Movie on October 9, Tenzing on October 16, Being Heumann on November 13, and Way of the Warrior Kid on November 25. The mix includes lighthearted action films starring Ryan Reynolds and John Cena, as well as awards-season hopefuls.

Apple TV is available as an app on smartphones, tablets, PCs, and Apple TV devices. New subscribers can get a seven-day free trial, Engadget noted.
