Apple TV to Add Dolby Atmos to F1 Coverage at U.S. Grand Prix
Apple TV will add Dolby Atmos to its Formula 1 coverage, starting with the U.S. Grand Prix in Austin from October 22 to 25. The feature uses F1's existing trackside microphones and sensors, according to Engadget.
Apple secured the exclusive U.S. broadcast rights for Formula 1 last year, and its coverage started with the first grand prix weekend earlier this year. The company created a dedicated channel for the series in the Apple TV app. Subscribers can watch races, practice sessions and sprint races, as well as pre-race and post-race coverage. The channel also offers onboard cameras, team radios and live telemetry.
Dolby Atmos delivers spatial sound, making audio seem as if it is coming from different parts of a room. John Couling, senior vice president for entertainment at Dolby Laboratories, told Business of Speed that Apple can use Formula 1's existing trackside microphones and sensors for its Atmos coverage instead of introducing new hardware, Engadget reported.
Viewers will need a TV or audio system that supports Dolby Atmos to use the feature. Engadget noted that Apple TV's library is not as expansive as those of other streaming services, and the company is not a massive sports broadcaster. The addition marks its first Dolby Atmos support for a sports offering.
