Apple Unveils HomeView Smart Display; Out-of-Warranty Repair Costs $279
Apple announced HomeView, a $299 7-inch smart home display, along with new Apple TV 4K, HomePod mini 2 and Home Collection accessories. According to 9to5Mac, out-of-warranty service for HomeView is estimated at $279, while AppleCare accidental damage service costs $39.
HomeView features a 7-inch Liquid Retina display and comes in desktop and wall-mounted forms. It can recognize up to six family members and switch among their information, calendars and other personal content. It supports FaceTime, music playback and smart home control. The personal context feature requires a compatible iPhone or iPad that supports Apple Intelligence. Siri AI on HomeView and Apple TV will initially be a beta version offered in English in markets including the United States, United Kingdom and Australia. HomeView will not initially be sold in the European Union.
The two HomeView models share the same price, but the wall-mounted version does not include a wall mount or power adapter, which must be purchased separately. The standard model is attached to a base with a more powerful built-in speaker system.
Alongside HomeView, Apple updated the Apple TV 4K with an A19 chip, AV1 decoding and three far-field microphones, enabling voice interaction without a remote. The new remote adds precision finding and sound-based locating. The device can be paired with up to four matching HomePod speakers to form a surround sound system. It is priced at $299 and ships on November 13. The HomePod mini 2 uses an S10 chip, adds a Sound Glow light effect that changes with music, and can serve as a speaker for compatible Macs. It comes in five colors, costs $149, and goes on sale October 30; Siri AI will arrive through a later software update. The Home Collection includes indoor and outdoor cameras, doorbells, locks, thermostats and temperature-humidity sensors. Accessories can be paired by tapping an iPhone and managed in the Home app. Supported camera recordings are stored in iCloud+ with end-to-end encryption and do not require a separate camera subscription. The series will launch starting in December, with some accessories arriving early next year.
According to 9to5Mac, Apple has published estimated service and repair costs for HomeView. The estimated service cost for either the standard or wall-mounted model is $279, listed under a single category, "Other damage." There is currently no breakdown for specific problems such as a cracked screen or a faulty speaker on the standard model, suggesting Apple may replace entire units rather than repair individual components.
For units covered by AppleCare, the accidental damage service fee is listed at $39, regardless of whether the device is the standard or wall-mounted model, or the type of accidental damage. 9to5Mac noted that Apple has not confirmed whether these fees cover full-unit replacements or repairs to individual components. The publication said it will continue to watch for updates to Apple's service and repair pricing, including whether the company adds more specific repair categories or fees.
