Apple Unveils HomeView Smart Display, Signals Siri AI May Reach Full-Size HomePods

Apple announced HomeView, a 7-inch smart-home display centered on Siri AI, and 9to5Mac reported website clues that full-size HomePods may also gain Siri AI.

HomeView has a 7-inch screen, a square body and a speaker base, a design that ifanr compared with the iMac G4. Reviewers cited by ifanr described the build as among the best they had handled on a smart-home screen. The Verge found it smaller than expected, with the front screen almost hiding the aluminum speaker base from some angles. The display is a Liquid Retina panel with True Tone and wide viewing angles; brightness runs from 500 nits at the top to 0.3 nits at the bottom, according to The Tech Chap. Marques Brownlee said the audio was acceptable, helped by dual speakers in the screen and an extra bass unit in the base, but maximum volume was lower than he expected. The wall-mounted version lacks that bass unit and is said to sound weaker, yet both versions carry the same price.

The software, called HomeView Software, avoids an iPad-style grid of apps. Its home interface is closer to an Apple Watch face, with swipeable views for weather, calendar, photos, music and smart-home devices. In The Verge's hands-on, the screen controlled a thermostat, operated a smart lock and pulled up live camera feeds; unlocking a door required face or iPhone authentication. The built-in camera can recognize up to six family members, automatically switching to their personal interface with messages and reminders when they approach, and each person can customize a home page. HomeView has no App Store, so third-party apps cannot be installed as they can on an iPad. Content can be moved from an iPhone with Continuity, and some bloggers said a CarPlay-like projection method may allow iPhone or iPad apps to appear on the screen.

Apple's larger purpose, ifanr argued, is to give Siri AI a home scenario rather than simply add another screen. In a demonstration reported by The Verge, Siri found a friend's flight information in the user's messages, estimated the friend's public-transit time home, and then set a home automation to turn on the coffee maker 15 minutes before arrival. Ifanr said such tasks move smart homes beyond preset automation rules toward intent-based execution, though the article also noted that the gap between demonstration and daily use remains wide and that overseas users have questioned Siri AI's performance.

The HomePod mini 2 keeps the previous design with refreshed colors but replaces the S5 chip with an S10 chip, which enables Siri AI. Full Siri AI support depends on pairing with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad, Apple says, allowing the speaker to draw on a user's personal context. According to 9to5Mac, leaker pdfu saw two clues on Apple's website suggesting existing full-size HomePods, likely only second-generation models, might also get the feature: images whose color glow matched the HomePod mini 2, and alt text describing a multi-colored Siri AI glow on top. Apple later replaced those images, leaving it unclear whether they were an error or an unready announcement. 9to5Mac noted that Apple sometimes withholds software features from older devices, but also pointed to Apple TV, where the Siri AI update is coming to second-generation devices and up, as a possible signal for HomePod 2. Even on the HomePod mini 2, the Siri AI update will arrive at a later date.

Availability will be narrower. Ifanr reported that HomeView has no mainland China launch plan and is also absent from first-wave markets including Japan, Hong Kong and major European countries. Siri AI initially supports English only. Ifanr drew a comparison with Apple TV, which has not been officially sold in mainland China in nearly two decades because of streaming services, content licensing and the local living-room ecosystem. HomeView would also have to work with cameras, locks, thermostats and other smart-home devices, raising questions about local housing, infrastructure, compatibility and service support.

Editor's Summary

Apple introduced HomeView, a 7-inch smart-home display built around Siri AI, alongside the HomePod mini 2, which uses an S10 chip and requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad for full Siri AI support. 9to5Mac reported that Apple website clues suggested full-size HomePods, likely second-generation models, may also gain Siri AI, though Apple has not confirmed it. HomeView is not planned for mainland China, and its wider experience depends on Siri AI and smart-home services that remain limited by region.
