Apple Wallet Driver's Licenses Expected in Utah, Kentucky and North Carolina

Sixteen U.S. states plus Puerto Rico currently support digital IDs in Apple Wallet on iPhone, 9to5Mac reported. Apple first added the capability to the Wallet app in 2021, and the report said the pace of states signing on has clearly accelerated. The addition of Utah, Kentucky and North Carolina would bring the total close to 20 states.

Utah's expected launch follows earlier technical signals. Evidence surfaced this summer that Utah and Virginia had both been added to Apple's backend for driver's license support, according to 9to5Mac. Virginia has since gone live, which the report cited as the basis for expecting Utah to be among the next states supported.

Kentucky had previously announced it would support Apple Wallet driver's licenses once it upgraded its digital ID system this summer. All indications suggest that upgrade has been completed, and based on the state's original plans, licenses in Apple Wallet should appear soon, 9to5Mac reported.

North Carolina has a longer timeline. The state recently announced the launch of its new digital driver's license system, and as part of that announcement confirmed that licenses will be supported in Apple Wallet by early 2027.

The report noted that another state could still launch before Utah, Kentucky or North Carolina, and that no specific rollout dates have been confirmed for Utah and Kentucky beyond the summer backend evidence and Kentucky's stated plans.
