Apple Wallet expands with custom passes and bill splitting in iOS 27

iOS 27 adds custom pass creation and Apple Cash bill splitting to Apple Wallet, expanding it beyond payments.

The custom pass feature, which arrives with iOS 27, is aimed at apps and businesses that don't already integrate with Wallet. Users can snap a photo of a physical pass—such as a gym scan tag or a Costco membership card—and let Apple Intelligence populate the details, or start from templates labeled Standard, Membership or Event. After registering a barcode or QR code, users can add names, dates, membership numbers or admission types. They can also personalize the pass with different backgrounds and color schemes.

Another new tool uses Apple Intelligence to read a receipt and split the bill through Apple Cash. The system factors in item quantities, tax and tips, and lets a user either request payment or pay their own share. The integration is limited to Apple Cash, so it won't work with external payment apps such as PayPal or Venmo.

For identification, Apple Wallet can hold a digital copy of an eligible driver's license or US passport. Currently, 15 US states and Puerto Rico support driver's licenses and state IDs in Wallet, and the US is the only participating country for virtual passports. These digital IDs can confirm age or identity at participating businesses and venues, and can also get travelers through TSA checkpoints on domestic flights. A physical passport remains necessary for international travel or border crossings.

Apple Wallet also serves as a transit card for participating public transit systems. Riders can tap their iPhone or Apple Watch without waking or unlocking the device thanks to Express Mode. That mode continues to work for a few hours even when the battery reaches zero percent, using power reserve mode, but only if the device is not powered off.

The app stores digital keys for compatible smart home locks and cars, allowing users to lock, unlock and start a vehicle, and even share a virtual car key. Hotel keys, employee badges and student IDs can also be added where compatible, either through supported integrations or the new custom pass option.

Finally, Wallet includes an order tracking feature. Tapping the three-dot icon in the top-right corner and choosing Orders after granting permission displays delivery updates, so users don't have to search their email for shipping information.
