Apple Watch Buying Advice in 2026: Series 10 Value and AppleCare for SE 3

Engadget weighs the 2026 value of Apple Watch Series 10 and AppleCare+ for Apple Watch SE 3, citing support, repair costs and discounts.

For Series 10, Engadget says Apple's incremental upgrades make older devices easier to recommend, but Apple Watch has historically had shorter software support than iPhone, typically four to six years of major updates. Released in 2024, Series 10 has already received three major watchOS versions and should be good for around three more years, though that is not certain. The first-generation Apple Watch Ultra, for example, only received four watchOS updates. Buyers who do not want to upgrade for several years may prefer to pay more for the newer Series 11 model, Engadget said.

The performance gap is also a factor. Engadget said the S11 chip in the latest Apple Watch Series 12 brings more accurate step tracking and better heart rate monitoring. According to MacRumors, cited by Engadget, the S11 chip is based on the A20 Pro and doubles RAM to 4GB, giving Series 12 more headroom for future watchOS updates. The writer, who uses a Series 10 daily, said it still has a few years of life left, but whether it is worth buying in 2026 depends on the discount compared with newer models.

Series 10 still has much going for it. Engadget noted it comes in the same two sizes, has a wide-angle OLED display that reaches 2,000 nits, and offers health and fitness tracking including ECG readings, sleep apnea notifications and cycle tracking. It supports Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, emergency features like crash and fall detection, water resistance and relatively quick charging. It also runs the latest watchOS. Social media users have pointed out that Series 10 has slimmer bezels than the recently launched Series 12, Engadget said. Series 10 also comes in a glossy Jet Black Aluminum colorway, while Series 12 has Black Aluminum; both offer titanium finishes, but Series 10 skips ceramic options.

Engadget listed reasons to consider a newer model. Apple's uncertain long-term software support for smartwatches is the biggest, and the writer's Series 10 struggles to maintain a smooth frame rate when opening apps or scrolling, noticeably slower than on watchOS 11. Series 12, with a better SiP and two more gigabytes of RAM, should perform faster for longer. Compared with Series 11, Series 10 misses no major health tracking features, but Series 12 adds a redesigned Health Sensing System that takes heart rate readings every five seconds instead of every five minutes, plus readiness scores, more accurate step tracking and Audio Intelligence. Series 10 has a cellular variant but lacks 5G support. Apple also claims up to 24 hours of battery life on its newest smartwatch, versus 18 hours on Series 10.

The bigger hurdle may be price. Apple no longer sells Series 10 directly, so buyers must shop through third-party retailers. Engadget said Amazon has renewed-condition Series 10 options starting around $250, noticeably cheaper than Series 12.

On AppleCare, Engadget said AppleCare+ for the Apple Watch SE 3 is relatively inexpensive at $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year for the Theft and Loss plan. It includes unlimited accidental damage incidents, battery service and up to two theft or loss claims per year. But it is not complete coverage. Accidental damage service costs $69 per incident, and a theft or loss replacement has a $119 deductible. Battery service is free only if the battery retains less than 80 percent of original capacity. A one-year warranty covering manufacturer defects comes with the watch, so AppleCare+ is additional. For theft or loss, Find My must be enabled when the watch is stolen or lost and remain enabled throughout the claims process.

Engadget said coverage is easier to justify for people in trades, construction, sports or other situations that could cause substantial damage. If a buyer can comfortably replace the watch and prefers to set aside cash, AppleCare+ is not essential. At the annual rate, three years of premiums come just under $90; adding one accidental damage claim brings the total to $159, and one theft or loss claim brings it to $209. That is a significant portion of the Apple Watch SE's $249 starting cost. Depending on when damage happens, buyers might prefer to put the money toward the next generation. A new battery is another reason for coverage only if the same watch will be used for years; if battery health is above 80 percent when replacement is desired, it is not covered.

Non-AppleCare repair prices matter too. For the GPS model of the Apple Watch SE 3, battery service is $99 and other damage repair is $199, with no theft option without coverage. For the cellular model, damage repair rises to $229. Engadget also outlined AppleCare payment options. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss for a single SE 3 renews until canceled. Annual billing costs less than monthly: $29.99 a year versus $35.88 total monthly, a difference of $107.64 total for three years of monthly payments versus $89.97 annually. AppleCare One starts at $19.99 monthly for an individual with up to three devices, plus $5.99 per additional device. AppleCare One Family costs $49.99 for up to six family members and covers eligible devices, with new Apple products added automatically. Buyers must enroll in the base AppleCare+ within 60 days; other plans usually allow adding devices less than four years old to an active plan, likely after a condition check.
