Apple Watch Series 12 Adds S11 Chip, Health Sensing Overhaul and AI Features

The Series 12 keeps the same 42mm and 46mm case sizes, but it introduces a Dark Bronze aluminum finish and a Ceramic option in Pearl White and Night Blue. Aluminum models use Ceramic Shield 2, which 9to5Mac describes as tougher, more durable glass than the comparable Series 11 models. The case dimensions have changed slightly: the 42mm model is 37mm tall, up from 36mm on Series 11, while the 46mm model is 40mm tall, up from 39mm. Screen size is unchanged, so the slightly larger case results in bigger bezels.

Inside, the Series 12 uses a new S11 chip, which the report calls the first notable performance upgrade since 2023's S9. Apple says the chip enables health and AI features exclusive to the latest models, though 9to5Mac notes the company did not specify how it affects other everyday tasks. Memory also doubles to 4GB, up from 2GB in Series 11.

The watch introduces what Apple calls a Health Sensing System, an overhaul of internal sensing components. For heart rate tracking, a second-generation electrical heart sensor and an always-on optical heart sensor enable high-frequency background heart rate tracking that can be viewed through a new Heart Rate watch face complication. Heart rate variability is now measured up to 24 times more often and can be viewed in a new section of the Heart Rate app, according to the report. A new Recovery HRV feature is described as best for identifying daily signals of stress and recovery. Step tracking is more accurate and gains a new Steps complication for real-time tracking from the watch face.

Software features include Audio Intelligence, which Apple describes as a brand-new class of Apple Intelligence features powered by the S11 chip. Some features will be available at launch, while others are scheduled for a software update in late 2026, 9to5Mac reports. The features require Apple Watch Series 12 or Ultra 4.

Siri Recap creates high-level summaries of conversations that users can review later, according to Apple. When it is turned on, Apple Intelligence automatically generates a title and key points in the new Siri app after a conversation. Live Rewind shows the previous 15 seconds of a conversation as a text snippet when the user double-presses the Digital Crown, helping them catch something they missed or are less familiar with.

Audio Intelligence also includes Shazam, which instantly detects music playing around the user and displays the song title and artist's name on the Music Recognition widget in the Smart Stack. Sound Recognition alerts users who are deaf or hard of hearing to important sounds even when their iPhone is not with them, listening for sirens, alarms, doorbells or a baby crying and using on-device intelligence to notify them when those sounds are detected.

The Series 12 adds a Readiness app powered by the overhauled health sensors. Apple says it analyzes recent activity, training load, vitals and sleep score to offer insight into a user's capacity for the day ahead. It provides a single 0-10 score and a recommendation of Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready or Go For It, helping users decide how to approach a workday or training plan. New watch face complications for steps and heart rate are also included.

Charging is faster on Series 12. A 15-minute charge provides up to 12 hours of battery life, compared with up to 8 hours on Series 11. Quoted overall battery life remains 24 hours, but outdoor workouts can now last up to 10 hours, 25 percent more than Series 11 supported. 9to5Mac also lists a GPS improvement among the changes.
