Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 Lack Handwashing Detection Support
Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 are missing handwashing detection support, though the feature remains in watchOS 27 and works on Series 11 and Ultra 3, 9to5Mac reports.
The support list includes Apple Watch Series 11 and Apple Watch Ultra 3, and handwashing detection is still included in the watchOS 27 guide. Apple's newest watches are absent from the supported hardware list. 9to5Mac reported that it is unclear whether the absence is an omission or a hardware difference. The publication added that there would be no reason to mention supported hardware if Apple planned to continue supporting the feature on its newest watches.
Handwashing detection arrived in 2020 as part of watchOS 7. 9to5Mac said the pandemic-era feature may simply no longer be supported by Apple's 2026 hardware. The Series 12 and Ultra 4 include the first overhauled processor in a few years and add new Audio Intelligence features such as Siri Recap and Live Rewind. Handwashing detection may have been left out.
9to5Mac said it would update its coverage if it learns more about the missing feature. Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 are available now, and 9to5Mac has published a review.
Editor's Summary
Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 are not currently supported for handwashing detection and timer, even though the feature remains in watchOS 27 and works on Series 11 and Ultra 3, according to 9to5Mac. It is unclear whether the omission is intentional or a hardware difference, and the watches are already available.
