Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 to Add Readiness Feature, but Not Series 11
Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 will add a Readiness feature to watchOS, TechRadar reports, matching similar scores from Fitbit, Garmin and Whoop. The feature will not come to the current Series 11.
TechRadar said the concept mirrors features from Google and Fitbit, Garmin and Whoop. Google's Daily Readiness Score uses metrics including heart rate, sleep, exercise and rest and turns them into a single number showing how prepared the body is for the day. A lower score suggests a rough night of sleep, stress or little movement, pointing to taking it easy. A higher score suggests good rest and energetic workouts.
The article was written by Lloyd Coombes, a freelance tech and fitness writer for TechRadar. He said he has used most Apple Watch models over eight years and has long praised the device as an extension of the iPhone for notifications, weather and music, as well as a fitness companion since the original model in 2015. He wrote that he had been asking for a Readiness-style feature for almost a decade, calling it the biggest missing piece in Apple Watch fitness tracking. He added that he was disappointed it is not coming to the Series 11, which he currently uses.
According to the report, Apple highlighted that the Series 12 and Ultra 4 offer the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable. The company revamped the underlying sensor technology, with the new hardware checking heart rate readings 60 times more frequently than last year's models and taking 24 times as many HRV readings at night. With more data, Apple's algorithms and the S11 chip can more accurately determine a user's readiness score, TechRadar reported.
The feature ties into the Vitals app, which arrived with watchOS 11. TechRadar said this connection is intended to help users spot patterns and trends in health data and understand how their body responds to exercise and daily life. The report did not say when the Readiness feature will be released.
Coombes wrote that he moved from the original Apple Watch Ultra to an Apple Watch Series 11 last year and loves the device. That makes it hard to justify an upgrade, he said, despite his long calls for the feature. He suggested he might upgrade next year.
