Apple Watch Series 12 to launch next week with new chip, health sensor, ceramic case option

Apple Watch Series 12 is set to launch next week, featuring a new S-class chip, an always-on heart rate sensor, and a ceramic case option, according to reports.

According to 9to5Mac, the new chip—likely named S12 or S11—will be more powerful and faster than previous versions, and is expected to be the first new Watch chip of the AI era. It is said to be designed to handle Siri AI improvements in watchOS 27, while also benefiting everyday features.

The heart rate sensor on Series 12 is reported to get always-on support, allowing it to continuously collect data throughout the day, not just during intense activity. This would match functionality offered by competitors like WHOOP. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said the new sensor can “continuously collect data throughout the day — not just when it senses you’re doing intense activity or at other random intervals.” The FDA reportedly reviewed an upgrade to hypertension notifications that is expected to debut next week.

Apple is also expected to bring back a ceramic case option for the first time since the Series 5 in 2019. According to Bloomberg, the Series 12 will be offered in two ceramic colors: white and dark gray. The exact price premium is unclear, but the last time Apple offered ceramic, it started at $1,299—far more than the current Apple Watch Ultra price.
