Apple’s $299 HomeView Needs Newer Apple Devices and iCloud+ for Full AI Features

Apple’s AI home hub HomeView ships Nov. 13 at $299, but personal-context and AI camera features require newer iPhones or iPads and an iCloud+ subscription, TechRadar reports.

The device has a 7-inch touchscreen and comes in wall-mounted or tabletop versions, TechRadar reported. It recognizes a user’s face and adapts the display so personal content appears in Messages, FaceTime, Calendar, Reminders and Find My.

Apple’s newsroom page says HomeView setup and multiuser support require a compatible iPhone or iPad running the latest software. Personal Context requests require a paired Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad running the latest software version, with Siri AI turned on and set to a supported language, according to the page.

In practice, that means an iPhone 15 Pro, any iPhone 16 or newer model, an A17 Pro iPad mini or an M1-or-newer iPad. The standard iPhone 15 does not qualify.

Without those devices, HomeView can still answer general-knowledge questions, control compatible smart-home products and offer improved music discovery, TechRadar reported. It cannot process requests involving personal information, such as finding details in Messages or Calendar and taking actions across apps.

A narrower requirement applies to customizing Siri’s expressiveness and speaking speed: that needs an iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Duo or an M4-or-newer iPad with at least 12GB RAM, according to TechRadar. The publication described this as a small voice-personalization feature rather than the threshold for ordinary Personal Context requests.

The smart-home features add more requirements. With a compatible HomeKit Secure Video camera, Apple Intelligence can summarize recorded activity—for example, describing a person leaving a package or a dog entering the garden—let users search recordings conversationally with requests such as “Show me when the parcel was delivered” or “When did the children get home?”, and connect related activity across different cameras.

To use those features, users need a HomeKit Secure Video-compatible camera, HomeView or another compatible Apple home hub, an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone or iPad, and an eligible iCloud+ subscription, TechRadar reported. Apple says footage is processed locally by the home hub or through Private Cloud Compute, rather than simply handing analysis to the paired iPhone.

iCloud+ plans start at $0.99 a month for 50GB, $2.99 for 200GB and $9.99 for 2TB, according to TechRadar. Recorded HomeKit Secure Video footage is retained for 10 days and does not count against normal iCloud storage. Users can view a compatible camera’s live feed and receive basic accessory notifications without paying for recorded history, but HomeKit Secure Video storage and the AI features that analyze and search stored recordings require the subscription.

TechRadar reported that a $299 HomeView does not independently provide the complete experience Apple demonstrates. Owners of an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 or another qualifying device may already have what they need for Personal Context, but people using a standard iPhone 15 or an older model could find the device considerably less personal unless they upgrade their phone.

The publication said the arrangement may suit Apple because HomeView is another reason to keep devices in the home relatively new, compatible and attached to an Apple service. Buyers who have not studied the footnotes may not see that difference before purchase, TechRadar reported.
