ARMSX2 PS2 emulator adds MaliSX2 GPU driver for older Pixels and MediaTek devices

ARMSX2 v2.8.3 has added the MaliSX2 Vulkan GPU driver for Android devices with Arm Mali graphics, a change Android Authority says can improve PS2 emulation performance on older Pixels and some MediaTek hardware.

MaliSX2 is a Vulkan driver for devices with Arm Mali GPUs, Android Authority said. It can be found in the emulator's GPU driver list under Settings > Renderer. The driver is expected to deliver better performance in many games on Mali-based hardware, the report said.

The change is particularly relevant for users who want to play PS2 games on older Pixel phones or on other devices with Mali graphics, including some MediaTek devices. Many advanced Android emulators run best on Snapdragon-powered devices, largely because custom Turnip drivers are exclusive to Snapdragon hardware and offer performance and stability gains over the default GPU driver, according to Android Authority.

With the MaliSX2 driver, ARMSX2 is extending a similar kind of GPU driver option to a broader set of Android phones and handhelds. The latest version of the emulator, ARMSX2 v2.8.3, is available on GitHub.
