ARMSX3 PS3 Emulator Update Delivers Playable Frame Rates and PS3 Theme Support

ARMSX3, the PlayStation 3 emulator from the team behind ARMSX2, has released an update that runs several games at playable frame rates, fixes crashes and adds PS3 theme backgrounds, SIXAXIS motion controls and expanded touch controls.

The emulator's team announced the changes in a Reddit post. ARMSX3 can now run Helldivers at 60 frames per second on Android handhelds such as the AYN Odin 3, and it runs Race the Sun at 60fps and Don't Starve: Giant Edition at 30fps. The update also resolves crashes in NBA 08, Burnout Paradise, Killzone 3 and The Guided Fate Paradox. Those games had previously crashed at launch or become stuck in an endless loop of loading screens or cutscenes.

When the team first launched the PS3 emulator, it was a proof of concept, and most games did not run at a playable frame rate.

ARMSX3 now supports PS3 themes as library backgrounds, including pictures, slideshows, animated themes and full 3D scenes that render live behind the library. The developers said they tested the feature with 92 dynamic themes and that each one played correctly. Users can add custom backgrounds by tapping the three-dot menu icon and choosing Change background, then Add. To limit battery use, ARMSX3 plays themes at 30fps and pauses playback when the user leaves the app.

The release adds SIXAXIS motion support on controllers that support motion input. It also brings touch-control features previously introduced in ARMSX2 version 2.7, allowing users to enable glide modes and multiple macros with pressure-sensitive touch controls in ARMSX3 1.0.

For players using multi-game discs, the emulator now displays each game as its own tile. Long-pressing a game's tile and selecting an existing saved state loads directly into that save.

Other changes in ARMSX3 1.0 include trophy sound playback, space reserved for display cutouts in portrait mode, disc swapping for games that require a second disc, and the ability to launch games directly without first adding them to the library. The update follows the pattern set by the team's earlier PS2 emulator work, where touch-control options were refined across releases. Android Authority reported the details of ARMSX3 1.0 based on the developers' Reddit announcement.
