AT&T Has No Plans to Support Apple's iPhone Handoff, Report Says
AT&T says it has no plans to support Apple's iPhone Handoff, leaving T-Mobile as the sole U.S. carrier offering it at launch.
An AT&T spokesperson told CNET that the carrier sees "potential in capabilities like iPhone Handoff," but added that "our focus remains on delivering innovations that make life simpler and keep customers connected with confidence." The spokesperson pointed to AT&T's "existing eSIM activation and transfer options across compatible devices."
Apple launched iPhone Handoff last week. The feature requires support from cellular carriers, and it moves a subscriber's number between two iPhones based on whichever device the user picks up, rather than requiring the user to move an eSIM manually from one phone to the other.
9to5Mac reported that its author used iPhone Handoff for a week while testing the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, and that the number switched to whichever iPhone was picked up, as Apple promised. The same report said AT&T's reference to existing eSIM activation and transfer options indicated the carrier did not have a complete grasp of how iPhone Handoff works and why it is more seamless than manually moving an eSIM back and forth.
T-Mobile is currently the only carrier in the United States supporting iPhone Handoff, and it charges $5 per month for the feature. Apple has said Verizon will add support by the end of the year, "with more carriers to follow." Outside the United States, Telekom Germany is a launch partner for the feature, and Apple says EE will add support by the end of the year. 9to5Mac noted that T-Mobile's $5 monthly charge, while unwelcome, is still significantly cheaper than paying for a second cellular plan.
