AT&T Tells iPhone 18 Pro Max Users to Install iOS 27.0.1, but Early Reports Say It Doesn't Fix Connectivity Issues

AT&T is urging iPhone 18 Pro Max customers to install iOS 27.0.1 to restore calls, texts and data, including 911 calls. Apple's release notes cite Face ID and camera fixes, and early user reports say the update does not fix the connectivity failures.

In a text message to customers, AT&T said an important Apple software update for the iPhone 18 Pro Max was available. The carrier warned that some phones may be unable to complete calls, texts or data sessions, including to 911, and directed users to update immediately through Settings > General > Software Update. AT&T also told recipients to contact AT&T or Apple with questions. A Reddit thread posted today included an AT&T customer who said they received that automated message. The source report contains a discrepancy: it first refers to AT&T directing users to iOS 26.0.1, while the text message and subsequent references cite iOS 27.0.1.

Apple released iOS 27.0.1 earlier this week. According to the release notes, the update addressed bugs related to Face ID and camera performance for iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max users. The notes did not mention fixes for cellular connectivity problems affecting AT&T customers. Many affected AT&T users said they updated when iOS 27.0.1 was released on Monday and still faced the same problems.

Affected iPhone 18 Pro Max users cannot connect to AT&T's network for calls, texts and data, and they see SOS in the iPhone status bar. The connectivity issues do not impact every iPhone 18 Pro Max user, but they appear to be relatively widespread.

The problems appear to be exclusive to the iPhone 18 Pro Max, which uses a Qualcomm modem. The iPhone 18 Pro, which uses Apple's C2 modem, is seemingly unaffected by the AT&T connectivity issues.

Editor's Summary

AT&T is directing iPhone 18 Pro Max users to iOS 27.0.1 for connectivity failures affecting calls, texts and data, including 911 calls. Apple's release notes list Face ID and camera fixes but no cellular fix, and early AT&T user reports say the update has not solved the issue. The problems appear limited to the Qualcomm-modem iPhone 18 Pro Max, while the Apple C2-modem iPhone 18 Pro is seemingly unaffected.
