Audiophile.fm Launches Free Ad-Free Hi-Res Radio Apps for iOS and Android
Audiophile.fm launched free, ad-free iOS/Android apps for CD-quality and hi-res internet radio, with no subscription.
Macs are not officially supported, but TechRadar said the iPhone app can be downloaded from the Mac App Store and ran on macOS 27 in the publication’s test. The app was created by Bojan Vidanovic, who said on Reddit’s r/BudgetAudiophile that he wanted an easier way to find and listen to lossless radio stations. According to TechRadar, the app brings together handpicked stations streaming in FLAC, from CD quality to hi-res, across jazz, classical, rock, electronic and other genres.
TechRadar said it found no catch. The app and website connect users to internet radio stations, which TechRadar said are presumed to hold the necessary permissions and licenses to ensure artists are paid. The app itself carries no ads, though some stations play ads to cover their costs, the report said.
TechRadar’s reviewer said the absence of an algorithmic recommendation feed produces serendipitous listening, with one session moving from Daft Punk to French jazz, Underworld deep cuts, the new Beck album, Culture Club and Alien Ant Farm. The reviewer said sound quality was consistently excellent because the stations broadcast in FLAC at CD quality or better.
TechRadar described the app as a work in progress. Equalization, Google Cast and AirPlay are on the to-do list, and Vidanovic is seeking feedback on Reddit, according to the report. The plan is to keep the core app free and add paid features at some point in the future, TechRadar said.
TechRadar said the service is not a replacement for Spotify, but could offer an alternative for audiophiles frustrated with the discovery options of major music services and interested in hearing what wired headphones and a headphone DAC can do.
