Aura Glass brings a glassy, Apple-like look to GNOME desktops

ZDNet reports that Aura Glass, a new theme for GNOME 48-50, delivers a dramatic glassy aesthetic with background blur and adaptive accents, available on major Linux distributions.

The theme is installable on GNOME 48, 49, and 50, and supports Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Arch, and CachyOS. It works with the Wayland display server, while X11 is supported with fallback blur. ZDNet tested Aura Glass on Fedora 44 running GNOME 50.

Aura Glass includes dynamic frosted glass, true background blur, adaptive accent colors, optional app window blur, a distraction-free volume and brightness pill, GDM login screen theming, a lightweight "No Blur" mode, and zero system bloat, according to the report.

The installation is done from the command line and requires Git. Users need to clone the Aura Glass repository and run the installer, with the whole process taking between 5 and 10 minutes. After installation, users are prompted to log out, and the themed login screen appears immediately after re-logging in.

ZDNet noted a noticeable performance hit when running the full feature set in a virtual machine with only 3 GB of RAM and 2 CPU cores. The reviewer suggests that with at least double that amount of RAM and cores, the performance impact is hardly noticeable.
