Avengers: Endgame Reclaims Top-Grossing Film Record as Coyote vs. Acme Tops Apple TV

A re-release has pushed Disney/Marvel's Avengers: Endgame past Avatar as the highest-grossing film ever, while Coyote vs. Acme topped Apple TV's movie chart in the U.S. and Canada.

Slashdot, citing Variety, reported that Endgame dropped to No. 2 on the all-time chart in 2021 when Avatar returned to theaters before Avatar: The Way of Water. Five years later, the Marvel film is back at No. 1. Disney owns both franchises: Avatar was released by 20th Century Fox, which Disney acquired in a 2019 merger.

Disney said on its website that the 38 Marvel Studios movies have generated more than $35 billion worldwide, making the Marvel Cinematic Universe the most successful film franchise in history. The company added that it is responsible for seven of the 10 highest-grossing films of all time. That list includes Cameron's Titanic and his first two Avatar films, this summer's Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the earlier Spider-Man: No Way Home, Marvel's 2018 Avengers: Infinity War, Star Wars: The Force Awakens at No. 7 and last year's Zootopia 2.

Separately, Coyote vs. Acme was released for rent or purchase on streaming platforms Tuesday and became the No. 1 most-watched movie in the Apple TV store for the United States and Canada, according to CBR, which cited FlixPatrol. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a 96% Certified Fresh Tomatometer score from critics and a 94% Verified Hot Popcornmeter score from audiences. Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter called it "one of the best live-action/animation films ever."

Preorders have opened for its DVD and 4K discs, and IGN reported that Coyote vs. Acme is also coming to Blu-ray with outtakes described as "not PG-rated." After the film took in $100 million at the box office last week, its distributors posted a message on social media: "It's only over when you stop trying."
