Bentley Supersports: A Stripped-Out Engineer's Indulgence

According to Ars Technica, Bentley offered test drives of the Supersports in Monterey, a lightweight model without hybrid, AWD, or rear seats.

Bentley provided flights from Washington, D.C., to Monterey and accommodation for Ars staff to drive the Supersports and ride in a preproduction Torcal EV. Ars stated that it does not accept paid editorial content.

Last week, Ars reported on the Torcal, Bentley's first battery-electric vehicle, which is intended to attract new customers and integrate sustainability into the brand's identity. The W12 engine has been replaced by a V8 plug-in hybrid powertrain, and the new Continental GT is described as improved as a result.

However, some Bentley engineers explored an alternative direction: building a car without the hybrid components or all-wheel drive, both of which have been standard on every new road-going Bentley since the turn of the century. Removing these systems, along with the rear seats, would significantly cut weight. This approach echoes a strategy used by certain OEMs, especially Porsche, which has profited from stripped-out road cars inspired by its race models.

The Supersports, as described by Ars Technica, represents "a stripped-out engineer's indulgence," a contrast to the brand's broader electrification push.
