Best Buy Offers Sony 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos Speaker System for $1,764.94

Best Buy is selling a Sony 5.1.2-channel Dolby Atmos surround-sound system for $1,764.94, according to TechRadar. The package includes the Sony STR-AN1000 AV receiver and CS-series speakers and saves more than $550.

The receiver supports Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision, according to the report. The speaker package includes floorstanding speakers, a centre channel speaker, surround bookshelf speakers, Dolby Atmos up-firing height speakers and an active subwoofer. TechRadar listed the components as the Sony STR-AN1000 7.2-channel AV receiver, reduced from $1,199.99 to $948.99; Sony CS three-way floorstanders, reduced from $299.99 to $173.99; the Sony SACS9M2 active subwoofer, reduced from $329.99 to $204.99; the Sony CS two-way centre speaker, reduced from $249.99 to $124.99; Sony CS three-way bookshelf speakers, reduced from $279.99 to $153.99; and Sony CS Dolby Atmos up-firing height speakers, reduced from $279.99 to $153.99.

TechRadar said speaker cable is not included and must be bought separately. It said Best Buy sells a range of cable options, with cost depending on the amount needed and the buyer's budget.

The report compared a separates surround system with a soundbar. It said TechRadar had been using a Samsung HW-Q990C 11.1.4-channel soundbar system as its reference audio setup, mainly for testing 4K Blu-rays and comparing other soundbars. It later changed to a separates system with Bowers & Wilkins 603 S3 floorstanders for the front channels, B&W 607 S3 bookshelves for surrounds, a B&W HTM6 S3 centre speaker and a B&W ASW610 subwoofer, powered by a Denon AVC-3900H AV 9.4-channel receiver.

TechRadar said the Denon and B&W system showed how much of an upgrade a full separates system could be. Watching the Batmobile chase from The Batman, the report said, it heard new detail through the 603 S3 front speakers and 607 S3 surrounds, including the rattling of leaves under the Batmobile's chassis. Atmos effects were described as realistic and immersive, with the trajectory of bullet spray or swerving tyres mapped precisely to the right channel. Sound moved from speaker to speaker during sweeping camera shots, creating a 360-degree dome effect, the report said.

The report said the subwoofer delivered substantial power that shook the room with impacts and explosions, while the front channels delivered crunch during a chaotic, car-crash-filled scene. It said the Samsung soundbar was very good, but the separates setup gave every element more room to breathe.

TechRadar said the Sony package may not be as premium as its Denon and B&W reference system, but the principle is the same: separate speakers provide more detail. With a price close to some high-end soundbars, the report called the Sony deal a strong option for buyers considering a full surround system. TechRadar also noted that some of the best soundbars can cost nearly $2,000, making the $1,764.94 package competitive for a separates setup.
