Unlike typical soundbars that fire audio straight at your couch, Atmos-enabled options use upward-firing and occasionally side-firing drivers to reflect sound off your ceiling and back down to your ears. Some compatible soundbars without up-firing drivers use digital signal processing for a virtualized 3D soundscape, but they pale in comparison.
Before speaker placement, make sure your apps and devices output a real Atmos signal. You'll need a premium subscription on platforms like Netflix or HBO Max, as content must be encoded in Dolby's spatial format. Select Blu-ray players are also Atmos-compatible.
Your source must connect directly to the soundbar via eARC for full potential. After connecting, set your TV's advanced audio settings to Bitstream out so the soundbar handles decoding and delivers maximized audio.
Placement is crucial. Don't tuck the soundbar under your TV or a shelf; position it slightly in front of your TV. Since upward-firing drivers need an unobstructed path to the ceiling, ensure a flat ceiling with no light fixtures or fans that could block sound waves. Place the soundbar no more than halfway up the wall, between floor and ceiling.
The soundbar should be parallel with your couch, as close to ear level as possible. If mounted off-center, too high, or too low, dialogue and effects may seem to arrive from another room. For side-firing drivers, ensure clear pathways for first reflections off walls, with no furniture or sound-absorbing materials in the way.
In smaller spaces, compact options like the Sonos Beam don't rely on up-firing drivers, allowing more seamless placement. They work well in apartments but cannot fully mirror the immersion of up-firing drivers.
