Bloomberg report details design of Apple's upcoming smart home display
Apple will launch its smart display within two weeks, with a 6-inch square screen and an iMac G4-style stand, Bloomberg reports.
Bloomberg reports that the home hub will have a 6-inch square display. Its overall design is reminiscent of the iMac G4, the early-2000s desktop whose half-dome-shaped base supported the screen on a metal arm. The device is said to be about as thick as an iPhone, with quarter-inch black bezels similar to those on older iPads and rounded corners that have no sharp edges, according to Mark Gurman.
It comes in Apple's standard gray aluminum finish with a rubberized bottom to help it stay on a table. Power is supplied through a USB-C port, and there is no built-in battery, so the device must stay connected to power at all times. It sits on a metal, round base with multiple rings of perforated speaker holes, and the display connects to that base through a polished metal arm. Users can tilt the display forward or backward. There are no volume or power buttons. A single front-facing FaceTime camera is included, and there is no rear camera.
Bloomberg also describes a second version of the home hub that is designed to be mounted on a wall. That model uses USB-C for power and has a thin, square-shaped base beneath the display that houses the speakers and microphones; the base sits flat on the wall below the screen.
