Bluesky adds algorithmic opt-out feature to keep posts out of Discover feed

Bluesky introduces an account-level setting that prevents posts from appearing in the Discover feed, giving users more control over their public content.

The new tool, available in the app's privacy settings, is an account-level control rather than a per-post filter, Engadget reported. Enabling it prevents all of a user's posts from being shown in Discover to people who do not already follow them. Engadget said the setting is labeled "ask apps to hide my posts from algorithmic recommendations," and TechCrunch noted the change can take up to an hour to fully take effect.

The feature does not make posts private; Bluesky still does not support fully private accounts. Instead, it limits the discoverability of public posts beyond a user's existing personal network. The company said it created the feature because not everyone using its platform wants to go viral, according to TechCrunch. Sometimes people just want to post for their followers without being exposed to larger crowds.

The preference is recorded at the account level on Bluesky's underlying AT Protocol, according to TechCrunch, meaning the choice travels with the user even when they post from another app built on the same protocol. However, while those third-party apps have access to this information, they still have to decide whether to respect it, Engadget added.

Even with the setting enabled, posts could still surface in other algorithmically curated feeds or services that use AT Protocol, Engadget explained. Bluesky described the change as "one of a few updates we're working on to give you more control over your experience and help you find your people."
