Bluesky applies for .bsky domain suffix to shorten user handles

Bluesky has applied for the .bsky domain suffix, a move that could shorten user handles.

Schneider shared the company’s long-term plan when he said Bluesky had applied to ICANN to operate “.bsky” as a suffix like .com or .org. If the application succeeds, users would be able to convert handles such as @sarahp.bsky.social into “sarahp.bsky,” the report said. The change could also give Bluesky room to develop user profiles beyond pages that hold a bio and posts, turning them into broader personal home pages that establish an online presence.

The application has not been approved. Schneider said ICANN, the nonprofit that oversees internet domain names, will publish applications for the new domains on October 7, 2026, and Bluesky’s request will be among them. The process is expected to take 18 to 24 months to complete.

Bluesky said it has not finalized how .bsky domains would be requested, registered or distributed. The company also said it has no plans to sell or monetize the domains. That decision sets Bluesky apart from a domain registration business that can be profitable and could offer a revenue stream for a startup that has raised significant funds but does not yet generate advertising revenue, according to TechCrunch.

Bluesky said selling domains would conflict with its support for the open web. “Domains are a big part of the open web, as they allow users to control their own online identity,” Rose Wang, Bluesky’s chief operating officer, said in a comment shared with TechCrunch. “Bluesky was built on the belief that you should own your presence online, not rent it from a platform that can take it away.”
