Bluesky expands video uploads to 10 minutes with faster speeds and 300MB file size
Bluesky now allows 10-minute video uploads, up from three minutes, and has increased the maximum file size to 300MB, according to a Tuesday announcement.
"Big video update! You can now post videos up to 10 minutes long, and they'll upload 2–3x faster. That's on top of the recent increase in maximum file size to 300MB," Bluesky said in a post. The new limit puts Bluesky on par with TikTok, which also allows videos up to 10 minutes when recorded directly in its app.
Because Bluesky runs on the decentralized AT Protocol, other applications built on that standard, including Bluescreen, Reelo and Skylight, will also be able to serve longer videos. The change comes as social platforms compete to make their services more video-friendly. Meta's Threads, a rival to both Bluesky and X, permits videos of up to five minutes. X lets free users upload 140-second clips, while paying subscribers can upload videos up to 16GB, which covers multiple hours.
The expanded video capability could help Bluesky attract users at a time when its audience is shrinking. According to Similarweb data cited by TechCrunch, Bluesky's active user count fell by more than 25% year over year as of July.
