BMW iX4 Debuts as Electric X4 With 428-Mile Range and 603 HP

BMW unveils the iX4, an electric X4 with up to 428 miles of range and 603 horsepower, arriving in March 2027.

The iX4 keeps the X4's tall, compact SUV shape and sloping rear roofline, but adds BMW's Neue Klasse kidney grille. It has short wheel overhangs, an aggressive front grille design, a substantial rear spoiler with an integrated brake light and low-profile rear taillights.

BMW will sell the iX4 in the United States in two configurations: the iX4 50 xDrive and the iX4 M60 xDrive. Europe will also get a third model, the iX4 40 xDrive. The vehicles use a 112kWh battery, and the 50 xDrive is rated for up to 428 miles of EPA range. The 800-volt architecture allows a 10 to 80 percent charge in 21 minutes. BMW has not announced the M60's range or charging specifications.

The iX4 50 xDrive produces 463 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph. The sportier iX4 M60 xDrive delivers 603 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque, reaching 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and a governed top speed of 149 mph.

Inside, the iX4 offers an optional 3D heads-up display, a 17.9-inch center touchscreen and BMW's new vertical spoke steering wheel. The standard sound system has seven speakers and 205 watts, while the M60 xDrive comes standard with a 13-speaker, 430-watt Harman Kardon system. The Panoramic iDrive assisted driving and infotainment systems run on BMW Operating System X, which is based on the Android Open-Source Project.

The iX4 50 xDrive will start at $67,695, about $10,000 less than the larger iX5 60 eDrive EV. BMW has not revealed pricing for the iX4 M60 xDrive, but Engadget reports that it is likely to be around $20,000 more based on BMW's typical M-vehicle surcharge.
