Borderless Gaming Adds DLSS 5 Workaround for PC Games on Steam

Borderless Gaming now adds DLSS 5 neural rendering via its BGFX pipeline, avoiding game DLL swaps or game-specific mods.

VideoCardz noticed the addition, according to TechRadar. The developer said: "DLSS 5 Neural Rendering is now available in Borderless Gaming – without replacing game DLLs, modifying game files, or needing a game-specific mod. Install the effect, select the preset, and apply it to your game." Borderless Gaming applies DLSS 5 directly through its own BGFX pipeline rather than forwarding requests to Nvidia's DLLs, the developer explained.

The implementation is a workaround, not native DLSS 5 support. It brings neural rendering into play with variable results. The app does not include the effect by default. After installing Borderless Gaming, users must download the appropriate effect, currently DLSS5-NR v0.2.1, from GitHub, where installation instructions are provided.

According to the developer, the workaround can run on a wide range of GPUs, not just officially supported RTX 5000 models. An RTX 3090 can typically hit around 30fps with DLSS 5 turned on. Frame rate will vary considerably depending on the game and graphics settings, but the developer's estimate suggests playable performance on the RTX 3090 is possible.

TechRadar cautioned that third-party apps should be downloaded and used at the user's own risk. Borderless Gaming has existed for a long time, but its Steam reviews have become colorful recently, with some criticism aimed at the DLSS 5 move. One reviewer wrote: "Added DLSS 5 for no reason but to make games look worse... Slop." TechRadar noted that DLSS 5 is not actually included in the app itself, despite such reviews.

Nvidia's DLSS 5 was controversial when first announced, though reception warmed considerably after it went live in NBA 2K27, according to TechRadar. Some players still dislike it, as the Steam reviews for Borderless Gaming show. It is also unclear whether Nvidia might take action against projects that tweak or play with DLSS 5 technology. TechRadar suggested that for now, with more gaming experimenters responding positively, Nvidia might let it slide, at least temporarily.

Editor's Summary Borderless Gaming, a Steam utility for borderless-window gaming, now supports a DLSS 5 neural rendering workaround through its BGFX pipeline. Users must download a separate effect from GitHub, and the implementation is not native DLSS 5 support. The move has drawn mixed Steam reviews and raises questions about whether Nvidia will respond to third-party DLSS 5 tweaks.
