Bose adds Auracast beta support to QuietComfort Ultra Headphones Gen 2

Bose's QuietComfort Ultra Headphones Gen 2 get a beta firmware update adding Bluetooth LE Audio and Auracast, a first for the company.

The firmware, labeled 10.12.12, has been quietly rolling out over the past few weeks. In addition to Bluetooth LE Audio and Auracast, it adds improved audio over wired USB connections, including balance for gaming audio and chat, and better compatibility for web conferencing apps.

Auracast was officially announced in 2022, but adoption has been slow. The technology lets a device broadcast Bluetooth audio to any number of supported headphones or speakers at the same time. According to The Verge, possible uses include gate announcements at airports, performances at local venues, and college lectures. It can also be used at home to watch TV while children are asleep or for extra hearing assistance; some Samsung and LG TVs have the functionality buried in their menus.

Only a few major manufacturers include Auracast, and only on select headphones or earbuds. Those devices include Sony, JBL headphones, Samsung Galaxy Buds, and Sennheiser, which also released an Auracast transmitter this year. Some smaller companies, such as EarFun, have added support. Bose is one of the most recognizable names in headphones, so its decision to finally add Auracast is significant for the technology, according to The Verge.

Bose spokesperson Tim Williams told The Verge by email that the QuietComfort Headphones (Gen 2) should get the beta firmware next. The Verge said it recently reviewed that model.
