Brain Scans Show Watching Short Videos Quiet Key Cognitive Control Regions

A new Zhejiang University brain-scan study finds that finishing enjoyable short videos deactivates brain regions linked to cognitive control, shedding light on the neural effects of short-video consumption.

The findings show that both the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) displayed reduced activity specifically when participants watched clips they liked enough to view to completion. These regions are part of the brain's cognitive control network, which helps people balance immediate pleasures against longer-term goals. Impairments in this system have previously been linked to depression, anxiety, ADHD, and addiction.

According to the report from RathBiotaClan, cited by Slashdot, the study was designed to test whether watching entertaining short videos itself suppresses cognitive control regions, and to investigate what neurochemical factors might explain why the suppression varies between individuals. Short-video platforms present rapid, algorithmically curated streams built for continuous, low-effort consumption, the report notes.

Prior behavioral research has tied internet addiction and smartphone addiction to weaker self-control, while separate neuroimaging work has documented disruptions to reward and cognitive-control circuits in people with behavioral addictions. However, the Zhejiang University team said few studies had directly tested the neural effect of watching enjoyable short videos until now.

The researchers examined 56 young adults, using both functional MRI and H-MRS to observe brain activity and neurochemical levels during video watching. The specific neurochemical factors behind individual differences were part of the study's second objective, though the report does not detail those findings.
