BYD Launches Han Flagship EV in China With Almost 630 Miles of CLTC Range
BYD has launched the Han, a flagship electric sedan in China, priced at 235,900 yuan and offering almost 630 miles of CLTC range, nine-minute fast charging, and luxury features aimed at premium rivals.
TechRadar reported that the Great Han can deliver around 508 miles on the stricter European WLTP cycle. The car is positioned to rival luxury models from Germany, the UK and elsewhere, and includes rear-wheel steering, an augmented-reality head-up display and dual-chamber air suspension.
The sedan is compatible with BYD's Flash Charge system, which allows a charge from 10 percent to 97 percent in just nine minutes, according to the report. TechRadar said this outdoes almost every EV on sale today for charging convenience.
BYD has not said whether it will introduce the sedan to Europe or other markets. TechRadar noted that the company is rapidly expanding its global network and may decide to offer it through its high-end Denza brand in the near future.
The report compared the Han's range to the Lucid Air Grand Touring, which it described as a benchmark for electric range, luxury and technology in the EV market but which costs almost $110,000 in the US. TechRadar said the BYD Great Han would cost much more than the approximate $35,000 exchange rate from Chinese yuan if it were sold elsewhere, but it would likely still undercut premium rivals by a tempting amount.
TechRadar said China is again showing it can deliver automotive technologies such as LiDAR-based autonomous driving systems, "crab walking" air suspension and large infotainment displays at low prices. It added that with Chinese badge snobbery rapidly evaporating, especially for BYD, luxury legacy automakers such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz could soon find sales of their range-topping models suffering not only in China but also in European markets they once dominated.
