BYD's New-Generation Seagull Grows Into Five-Seat Compact EV, Starts at 65,900 Yuan

BYD's new Seagull becomes a five-seat compact EV with a 4,205mm body and rear-wheel drive, from 65,900 yuan.

The size increase is accompanied by a change in chassis layout. The new Seagull drops the front-mounted motor for a rear-mounted rear-wheel-drive setup and replaces the torsion-beam rear suspension with a multi-link independent rear suspension. Despite the longer body and wheelbase, the minimum turning radius remains 4.95 meters.

The car uses a 95 kW motor with 130 N·m of peak torque and a top speed of 150 km/h. Its battery is BYD's second-generation Blade battery, with an official energy consumption of 9.0 kWh per 100 km, and it supports BYD fast charging marketed as 'charged in nine minutes.'

Driver assistance can be had with an optional lidar and BYD's God's Eye B system, enabling navigation assistance on urban and highway roads. The car also has six airbags and a high-speed tire-blowout stability system.

The rear-drive layout frees up space at the front, giving the car a 94-liter front trunk. Rear luggage capacity expands to 1,380 liters when the rear seats are folded, and 24 liters of small drawers are fitted under the rear seat cushions. Inside, the Seagull has a 15.6-inch floating central screen running DiLink 150, a 50 W air-cooled wireless charging pad on the lower console, and front seats with power adjustment, heating and ventilation.

The 65,900-yuan entry version has 320 km of range and does not support fast charging. The version with 420 km of range and fast charging starts at 75,900 yuan and comes with 12 months of free fast-charging benefits.

Ifanr reported that the upgrade comes as the small pure-electric market shifts. In August, Geely Xingyuan delivered 39,651 vehicles, Leapmotor A10 delivered 30,652, BYD Yuan Up delivered 22,958, Wuling Hongguang MINIEV delivered 11,033 and the first-generation Seagull delivered 10,103. The models leading the sales ranking generally have bodies just over four meters long.

The 50,000-to-100,000-yuan segment has become more crowded. Geely Xingyuan brought a body just over four meters, rear-wheel drive and independent rear suspension into the price range; Leapmotor A10 offered longer range and stronger intelligent features; and Changan Qiyuan Q05, a plug-in hybrid SUV, was priced into the same budget through price adjustments, according to the report.

The new Seagull also overlaps with BYD's own models. Yuan Up and Dolphin remain front-wheel-drive; Yuan Up uses a torsion-beam rear suspension across its range, while Dolphin has independent rear suspension only on higher trims. Neither currently has the second-generation Blade battery or fast charging. Ifanr reported that the new Seagull now exceeds them in specifications, and BYD will need to clarify the positioning of the three models.
