ByteDance and Tencent Reportedly Receive 10,000 NVIDIA H200 Chips Each

ByteDance and Tencent have each received 10,000 NVIDIA H200 processors over the past few weeks, according to the Financial Times, as China eases restrictions to help local firms train advanced AI models.

The United States had previously banned the sale of H200 chips to China over national security concerns, allowing NVIDIA to sell the processors only to approved Chinese customers starting in December 2025. Reuters reported in January that China had agreed to import several hundred thousand H200 chips, and in May it reported that the U.S. had granted 10 Chinese firms, including ByteDance and Tencent, permission to purchase the processors.

While the two companies are each allowed to buy up to 100,000 H200 chips, Chinese authorities have reportedly told them to keep most of the processors out of mainland China and instead ship them to Hong Kong, even though the companies do not currently have data centers there. The move is intended to support China’s domestic chip industry, which has been developing its own AI processors in response to U.S. export controls.
