Cambridge Audio launches Spira turntable aimed at first-time vinyl owners

Cambridge Audio's new Spira turntable, priced at $499, targets first-time vinyl owners with a built-in phono preamp, Bluetooth and minimal controls.

Cambridge designed the Spira to be straightforward to set up and use rather than to compete with high-end decks. It carries a built-in phono preamp and can connect over Bluetooth; TechRadar reported that Cambridge's press release did not list any other connection options. A pre-fitted Audio-Technica cartridge sits on an aluminum tonearm and is described as easy to replace for buyers who later want an upgrade. The platter is steel, and the motor is housed in a wooden plinth intended to reduce unwanted resonance.

Controls are limited to an rpm speed dial, which TechRadar said should keep the deck from overwhelming newcomers. In price and complexity the Spira sits below Cambridge's own Alva TT V2, though it is not as cheap as some entry-level models such as Sony's PS-LX310BT; within the turntable market overall it remains toward the lower end.

Cambridge says the Spira can be connected to a wide range of audio equipment, from floorstanding speakers to a single Bluetooth speaker, so it can slot into a system a buyer already owns. Its color range matches that of other Cambridge products, including the company's speakers, allowing the deck to be coordinated with existing kit.

TechRadar noted that the minimalist layout may not appeal to experienced record collectors who look for more adjustments, but described the Spira as an all-purpose option suited to most buyers.
