Camera Bump Makes Foldable Phones Wobbly, Report Finds
According to Engadget, a large camera bump makes foldable phones like the Galaxy Z Fold 8 wobble on tables, while creases, software gaps, and high prices still hinder wider adoption.
The problem is especially noticeable on Samsung's latest Galaxy Z Fold 8, where the vertically placed camera module protrudes considerably. Engadget notes that Reddit is full of posts from users complaining about the wobble, and some have gone as far as tearing their phones apart to remove the rear cameras altogether. As phone bodies get thinner while camera sensors demand more space, the bump is likely to persist; a thicker case might be the only practical remedy for now.
Aside from the wobble, foldables still come with trade-offs. The screen crease remains visible, especially after months of opening and closing. Software is another issue: few Android apps take full advantage of tablet-sized displays, and apps like TikTok look awkward on the Z Fold 8's wider, shorter screen. Engadget says Apple could have an advantage with its rumored first foldable iPhone, as iOS apps tend to adapt to new devices more quickly.
Price is also hard to ignore. Foldables are far more expensive than regular phones, and they do not always pack the best hardware. The $2,100 Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, for example, lacks 5x optical zoom and 60W fast charging found on the Galaxy S26 Ultra. The rumored foldable iPhone may similarly omit a telephoto lens and Face ID, features that are standard on iPhone Pro models.
Ultimately, Engadget says consumers still have to choose between a foldable screen and the features they expect from a premium phone. That choice may disappear someday, but for now, it remains.
