Can You Use a USB-C Laptop Charger on Your Phone? A Guide to Fast-Charging Standards

USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) is a charging standard developed by the USB Implementers Forum that allows a charger and device to communicate. When plugged in, the charger advertises its power levels, and the device selects the highest level it can safely use. Because of this negotiation, a 100W laptop charger cannot damage a phone rated at 20W. Even if one side lacks USB-PD support, the charger defaults to a safe output, and the phone charges slowly but safely.

A laptop charger may charge a phone faster if the phone supports higher-voltage charging and the charger can deliver it. For example, Apple's fast charging for recent iPhones requires a 20W or higher adapter, so a 65W laptop charger can speed up charging. However, if a phone maxes out at 20W, plugging it into a 100W charger will not make it charge faster. The phone only draws its rated power, and extra wattage simply provides headroom for other devices.

Engadget cautions that cheap or uncertified chargers and cables can be risky. Counterfeit chargers may bypass isolation barriers, allowing voltage spikes to reach the phone. Low-quality USB-C cables may lack required resistors. Users should check for safety certification markings before use.

The article also explains the confusing fast-charging landscape. USB PD is now the closest to a universal standard, used widely across phones, tablets and laptops. Newer versions like PD 3.1 support up to 240W for laptops and monitors, while phones typically need much less. PPS (Programmable Power Supply) is an advanced USB PD feature that allows precise voltage and current adjustments, improving efficiency and heat management. Samsung's Galaxy S26 Ultra and Google's Pixel 11 series use PPS for their fastest charging.

Proprietary systems from phone makers still exist. OnePlus and Oppo use SuperVOOC, and Xiaomi uses HyperCharge, but reaching advertised speeds usually requires the matching proprietary charger and cable. Many of these phones also support USB PD, though at slower speeds. Engadget notes that manufacturer claims of 80W or 100W charging should be taken with caution, as phones charge fastest when the battery is low and taper off as it fills.

Fast charging is not necessarily bad for battery health. Lithium-ion batteries degrade over time, and heat can accelerate that, but modern phones manage temperature and reduce power when needed. A slower charge that keeps temperatures lower can be gentler on the battery, but in practice, temperature management and charging habits matter more than the specific protocol.
