Canva launches Canva Craft, its first AI image model
Canva has launched Canva Craft, its first AI image-generation model, which plans designs before generating images and competes with OpenAI, Microsoft and Google. It is available globally.
Canva Craft uses a two-stage architecture. According to Canva, that system allows it to generate complex images that require legible text and precise object placement more accurately. It can produce images at up to 2K resolution and in more than 30 aspect ratios. The company says it can create social media posts and marketing content as well as realistic scenes, digital art and environmental imagery.
The launch extends Canva's push into AI. In April, the company introduced prompt-based editing capabilities that let users create or change a design by describing it. Canva also added layers to AI-generated images, allowing users to change part of an image while leaving the rest untouched.
Canva said it trained Craft on millions of human-made templates from its content library, including social media posts, presentations, infographics and menus. The model is currently ranked fourth on Design Arena's leaderboard for AI image generation, a crowdsourced benchmark for AI designs. It trails OpenAI's GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst, GPT-Image-2.5 Flare and GPT-Image-2, according to the report.
Canva said the model includes robust input and output moderation, privacy and safety controls, and reporting tools. The company plans to let AI agents connect to Canva Craft through the open Model Context Protocol. It also plans to release Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast models that it describes as more efficient.
Canva Craft is available now to all users globally, according to The Verge. Users can try it by opening the three-dot option on Canva's left-hand menu and selecting Dream Lab.
