CarPlay gets three major app updates ahead of iOS 27

CarPlay in August gains MLB, Meta AI, and Storm Radar apps, with iOS 27 set to add Siri AI and more features next month.

MLB upgraded its iPhone app mid-season to improve the CarPlay experience. Fans can now browse live and upcoming games, select a matchup, and choose their preferred team’s radio feed. The CarPlay interface also displays baseball scores and key game details while the broadcast plays, with a hide-scores setting respected for users avoiding spoilers.

Meta AI for iPhone now works with CarPlay, though the rollout appears limited. The Meta AI app joins ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Grok as third-party chatbot apps compatible with CarPlay. This integration highlights CarPlay’s ability to bring existing iPhone apps into the vehicle, offering a wider choice of AI chatbots than most built-in infotainment systems.

Storm Radar from The Weather Channel is another major CarPlay addition. The app provides a map of the user’s location, with satellite and default map views, plus data layers for radar, clouds, and precipitation. Navigation features show current weather conditions alongside ETA and destination weather. The Weather Channel said CarPlay support includes automatic rerouting and weather alerts along the route that refresh as you drive.

Looking ahead, Apple will upgrade CarPlay for all users with the iOS 27 update, introducing a dedicated Siri app and Siri AI. Installing the update or getting a new iPhone with iOS 27 will automatically add these features to CarPlay.

In the meantime, Volvo has upgraded three SUVs with Spatial Audio through CarPlay for Apple Music and Apple Podcasts, bringing Dolby Atmos sound support to drivers. Earlier this year, Pioneer released an aftermarket head unit that also supports Dolby Atmos and Spatial Audio via CarPlay.
