ChatGPT, Claude and Grok Suffer Simultaneous Outage

ChatGPT, Claude and Grok went down at nearly the same time on Sept. 3, forcing companies to apply fixes.

According to The Verge, ChatGPT began returning error messages at around 11 a.m. ET. OpenAI’s status page said there were “elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex,” and the company said it had applied a mitigation and was monitoring recovery. 9to5Mac reported the issue was affecting ChatGPT on the web, mobile and desktop.

Claude problems were reported around 10:30 a.m. ET. Anthropic’s status page initially listed Mythos/Fable 5.1, Mythos/Fable 5, Opus 5, Opus 4.8 and Opus 4.6 as affected, then narrowed the outage to Opus 4.8 and Opus 5. Anthropic said it was continuing to work on a fix, according to The Verge.

Grok was down across its app and website, and xAI said it was “working on restoring service as quickly as possible,” The Verge reported. Android Authority said multiple AI models were not functioning as intended and that OpenAI had already started mitigation steps, with engineers continuing to monitor the situation.

The cause of the simultaneous outages was not immediately clear, and The Verge noted it was unknown whether the incidents were related. The publication said it had contacted OpenAI, xAI and Anthropic but did not immediately receive comment.

The outage comes as 9to5Mac reported that OpenAI was rumored to be sharing news as soon as today about its next large model, code-named Astra. The new model could take OpenAI from GPT-5.6 to GPT-6.
