ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, Gemini Hit by Rare Overlapping Outages

Four major AI models—ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, and Gemini—suffered overlapping outages on Thursday morning, a rare simultaneous failure; OpenAI and Anthropic recovered while Grok was still impaired.

OpenAI and Anthropic, the companies behind ChatGPT and Claude, reported elevated error rates and said service had been restored. Grok remained impaired. Third-party monitoring indicated a likely outage at Gemini, but Google had not publicly acknowledged the problem as of press time Thursday. Other major internet platforms, including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Cloudflare, had not reported major issues, though DownDetector showed some increase in reports for all three on Thursday morning.

The scale of the event stood out because the four affected models occasionally go down on their own, but simultaneous interruptions in the same short period are rare. Service records cited by Ars Technica show that Claude reported 99.4 percent uptime over the past 90 days and last reported a similar three-hour partial outage on Aug. 24. OpenAI reported 99.63 percent uptime for ChatGPT and 100 percent uptime for ChatGPT Codex over the same period; ChatGPT's so-called Work Mode logged an hours-long stretch of elevated latency on Aug. 31.
