ChatGPT for Teens: OpenAI launches dedicated youth mode with stricter safeguards

According to Engadget, OpenAI attempted to automatically enroll all young users in the new experience. Lauren Jonas, OpenAI's head of youth and families, said there is no need for a teen to create a new account or change anything; if the company predicts a user is under 18, or the user has stated so, it becomes the default experience.

The teen experience is built around learning and safety. On the learning side, ChatGPT for Teens brings together features including Study Mode, which uses a Socratic approach to guide users to their own solutions rather than directly answering questions. OpenAI is also introducing Study Hours, which automatically enables Study Mode during set times of the day, and can be configured by teens or their parents through a linked account. Even without Study Hours, ChatGPT will recognize when a young user appears to be trying to shortcut an assignment and attempt to redirect them to Study Mode. Jonas said the company has run randomized controlled trials of Study Mode and is seeing positive gains in performance, though she declined to share specific numbers. The system can generate visuals to explain concepts across more than 300 topics, including integrals, mitosis and moon phases.

On safety, the mode defaults to tighter restrictions on prohibited or sensitive content, including graphic violence, depictions of self-harm, and sexual or romantic roleplay. It will also surface warnings and safety information around topics such as eating disorders. Parents with linked accounts can set quiet hours when ChatGPT is unavailable, and receive notifications if the system flags possible safety risks. OpenAI has added stricter limits on relational boundaries: the model should not call itself a friend, suggest it has personal feelings, or suggest sentience. Built-in break reminders will emphasize that ChatGPT is an AI and will trigger more often. Teens can personalize the experience with options such as wallpapers, accent colors and voice variations, which Jonas said is meant to let them customize without blurring the line between a useful tool and a human relationship.

The parental notification system is expanding. Engadget reported that last month OpenAI began notifying parents with linked accounts when their teen has been kicked off ChatGPT for violating policies on violent threats. With this release, the company is extending notifications to conversations related to eating disorders. Jonas said all flagged content is reviewed by full-time OpenAI employees before a parent is notified, and the goal is to notify parents within an hour of the prompt. She added that the company is continually working to improve detection of when a teen is struggling.

The Verge noted that many of the protections described are not entirely new. OpenAI rolled out age-prediction features at the start of the year, while parental controls and study mode arrived roughly a year ago, and it said last month it would show teens more frequent break reminders. The launch consolidates existing safeguards with a handful of smaller additions. Engadget also provided context: OpenAI announced last September, after it was sued for allegedly enabling the death of 16-year-old Adam Raine, that it was working on a system to automatically identify teens and restrict their usage. Nearly a year later, that system is now part of ChatGPT for Teens, though OpenAI has not released data on how effective its age gating has been in testing.
