ChatGPT may soon let you lock sensitive chats with PIN or fingerprint, hidden code suggests

Hidden code in ChatGPT's Android app hints at a new 'locked chats' feature that would protect sensitive conversations with PIN or fingerprint scan.

The discovery was made by Android Authority, which found not-yet-active code in the ChatGPT for Android app. References include "locked chats" and the ability to "protect chats" from prying eyes. One line reads: "Lock a chat to keep its title and content out of view in your regular sidebar, history, and search results."

ChatGPT already offers temporary chats that disappear after closing. Locked chats appear to be more permanent. Questions remain about how locked chats might interact with memory and recall features; it is possible that content from locked chats would only be referenced by other locked chats if memory is enabled.

Such a feature could be useful for sensitive queries like medical questions, surprise gift research, or resignation letter drafts. Even though devices are already protected by PINs and biometrics, an extra layer of security could offer peace of mind.

There is no indication of when the feature will launch, and OpenAI could change course. Users should look for it in the ChatGPT app in the coming weeks.
