Chip software automation startup Embedd raises $2.7M pre-seed
Embedd Ltd., a London startup automating chip software integration, raised $2.7M in pre-seed funding led by Seedcamp to speed development for physical AI devices.
The company said almost $19 billion has been invested in physical AI this year, including autonomous cars, connected medical devices and humanoid robots, but most intelligent machines face a common bottleneck before reaching the market: the software powering them must communicate with dozens of different semiconductors embedded in the hardware. The chips do not share a common language, forcing engineers to manually write code for each one.
Embedd was founded by Ukrainian technology entrepreneurs Michael Lazarenko, Maxim Gorinov and Valentin Gololobov. Their previous hardware company experienced chip shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic and later Russia's invasion of Ukraine, leading them to source dozens of new components and repeatedly rewrite software for each. They created Embedd to automate code generation for chip communication.
Instead of engineers reading thousands of pages of documentation and hand-writing code, Embedd creates a digital twin of the hardware. Its AI agents use the digital twin to obtain context and generate the code needed for the chip to communicate with the software that runs on it. The startup says the platform enables customers to ship production-ready software for semiconductors up to six times faster than previously possible.
"The next wave of AI will power factories, vehicles, robots and critical infrastructure, but today, every change in hardware creates huge complexity for software teams, and that friction is already slowing innovation," Lazarenko said. "We built Embedd to address this."
Embedd has already worked with chipmakers including Microchip Technology Inc. Rodger Richey, vice president of development systems at Microchip, said chipmakers are no longer differentiated mainly by chip speed but by how easy they are to build on. "Our work with Embedd is about meeting developers inside the software ecosystems they've already committed to, rather than asking them to come to ours," he explained.
Lazarenko said the funds will be used to expand the platform's capabilities and help more semiconductor makers bring products into emerging software ecosystems.
