Chrome 155 Lets Googlebook Users Install Any Webpage as a Web App

Chrome 155 for Googlebook OS now lets users install any webpage as a web app, even without an installable manifest, and is rolling out through Google Play over the next few days.

The installed web apps can open in their own windows, appear in the app launcher, and be pinned to the taskbar or homescreen. The same Chrome 155 update also moves Chrome Settings into a separate tab, Android Authority reported. Google is rolling out the update through Google Play over the next few days.

Googlebook OS is barely out of the starting gate, but early adopters have already given Google a fairly clear homework list. Apps have been one of the biggest talking points, from some Android apps behaving differently across hardware to major Google services running as web experiences instead of native Android apps.

Google now appears to be moving quickly on some of that feedback. The latest Chrome update addresses one particularly annoying limitation for Googlebook owners. Previously, a website without the required web app manifest could only be saved as a shortcut, which opened in a regular browser tab rather than as an app-like window. With Chrome 155, any webpage can be installed as a web app even when the website was not specifically designed to be installable.

The rollout is happening through Google Play over the next few days, according to Android Authority. The update applies to Googlebook users and follows early user feedback about app behavior on the new platform.
