Chrome on Googlebook OS Ships Without Multiple Profile Support, Google Employee Confirms
Google's new Googlebook OS does not support multiple profiles in Chrome, a Google employee has confirmed, even though Chrome OS and iOS have offered profile switching for years. Users can work around it by installing Chrome Beta or Canary.
According to Android Authority, the confirmation came from Googler Mishaal Rahman in a Reddit thread. "Specifically for Chrome on Googlebook OS, it does not currently support multiple profiles, but I'll pass this feature request on to the team!" Rahman wrote.
The outlet reported that its review team received Googlebook units and that two of its staffers, using the ASUS Googlebook 14, could not find profile support in Chrome. Clicking the profile image at the top of the browser led only to the Chrome account settings page, with no option to switch profiles, and the three-dot menu did not list a profile with a switch-accounts option, the report said. The behavior was not a glitch or a device-specific problem, the publication added, citing Rahman's statement.
Googlebooks went on sale with five premium models offered at launch. The platform is described as a hybrid between Chrome OS and Android, and its Chrome browser has inherited a limitation more typical of smartphones. Android Authority noted that the absence of profile switching in Chrome on Googlebook OS is in line with Chrome on Android.
The omission stands out because the Chrome browser on Chrome OS allows users to move between multiple accounts easily, and Chrome on iOS also supports multiple profiles. Android Authority said it had expected the new operating system to inherit its predecessor's browser behavior.
A commonly used workaround is to install a separate Chrome branch, such as the Canary or Beta release, which allows signing in with a different account. Those releases are available on the Play Store, and Android Authority said it confirmed the solution works on the new Google-powered laptop.
Android Authority said it hopes Google adds multiple-profile support to Chrome on Googlebooks quickly, describing the current state as a clear downgrade compared with Chromebooks. Google has not announced a timeline for the feature, and Rahman's message offered no date for a change.
