Claude can now work in the background on your Mac while you keep typing

Claude can now use a Mac in the background, allowing users to multitask without cursor or keyboard takeover. Beta for Pro and Max.

The new capability works with Claude Cowork and Claude Code. When a user hands off a task, Claude will try to complete it entirely in the background, letting the person use the computer for anything else. If the AI needs to go full screen to finish the job, it requests permission once per session. It also waits until the user has stopped typing before it attempts to control the keyboard.

Anthropic's documentation describes a clear order of operations. Claude first checks whether it can use existing connectors to complete the task. If that fails, it moves to the in-app browser or Chrome. Only when screen interaction and full control of the cursor and keyboard are truly necessary will it take over, and only with the user's consent.

This background computer use feature is currently in beta and available to subscribers on Claude's Pro and Max plans. It is limited to the Claude app for Mac for now. Users can activate it by navigating to Settings > General > Computer use.
