Claude Left Alone on a Virtual Island Starts to Play, Researchers Find

AI agents alone on a virtual island for 30 hours explored, set goals and seemed to play, MIT Technology Review says.

The experiment was described as reminiscent of the films Cast Away and Home Alone. It was built around a simple question: What do AI agents do if you do not tell them to do anything? The answer, according to the newsletter, looks a lot like play.

During the 30-hour stretches, the agents set about exploring the limits of the virtual world and came up with their own goals. They tried to scale the highest point on the map and tested how high they could throw a block. A lot of what they were doing met the bar for play, the report said.

The report did not resolve whether the behavior was truly playful or simply role-playing. It raised the question directly, asking whether the agents were genuinely playing or only role-playing.

The item appeared in a newsletter that also linked to reporting on the wider use of AI agents, including websites beginning to close their doors to agents, new problems for online sellers, and debate over whether people want agents to smooth out friction in their lives.
